Niagara Crisis Plan Templates – (June 2017)
Purpose of the Guideline:
Emergency and service providing agencies often interface when individuals with complex needs and/or dual diagnosis, who are 16 years of age or older, when they experience a crisis. The goal of this guideline is to ensure that these services work together in a manner that:
- Recognizes that individuals with complex needs and/or a dual diagnosis are entitled to the same services and are required to abide by the same regulations as all other Niagara citizens, while acknowledging the need for a specialized approach to these crisis situations.
- Ensures that services are provided by the most appropriate provider(s) and that a team approach addresses the needs of the individual.

Windsor Essex Emergency Binder – PDF
This Emergency Binder was developed by the Windsor Essex Dual Diagnosis Committee as a way to help families & caregivers. There may be times when you need to accompany your loved one to the hospital in a Mental Health Crisis.
It can be very hard when you are dealing with a crisis, and after trying everything you can think of, you may feel the only thing you can do is go to the Emergency Room (ER) with your family member. If this binder is kept up to date, it should help make things easier for you at the hospital.
The binder can be given to the Triage Nurse in the ER and she/he can copy the important information the hospital needs to set up a chart.

Research Snapshot: What affects whether people with intellectual disability who come into contact with the police get arrested?
When individuals with intellectual disability come into contact with police because of a crisis, a number of things can happen. They can be arrested, taken to an emergency room, or have the issue resolved on the spot. However, research suggests that these outcomes might be more about the views that others have about people with intellectual disability, and less about their actual behavior.
